A burn injury lawsuit filed last week in the Multnomah County Circuit Court is seeking $49,000 from Jody’s Restaurant & Lounge, a Portland area strip club that allegedly served the plaintiff a flaming shot of booze that ended up burning him. According to the documents associated with the complaint, the plaintiff – a 28-year-old man – was celebrating his birthday in September 2013 at Jody’s Restaurant & Lounge.
At some point during the birthday festivities, a friend of the plaintiff requested that the bartender light a shot of Bacardi 151 on fire and serve it to the plaintiff. The bartender, who has not specifically been named in the burn injury lawsuit, complied even though the plaintiff was visibly intoxicated (and probably shouldn’t have been served more alcohol), and the plaintiff downed the fiery shot. Doing so reportedly caused the plaintiff to catch on fire and ultimately resulted in him suffering burn injuries on 4 to 5 percent of his body – including on his face, neck and upper chest area.
As court documents for the burn injury lawsuit explain, the plaintiff is now seeking just over $2,700 in medical expenses and more than $46,000 in damages for his pain and suffering. Although Jody’s Restaurant & Lounge appears to no longer be in business (as the phone has been shut off, the doors closed and the business website taken down), this burn injury lawsuit will continue to press on in court.
Filing a Burn Injury Lawsuit: Getting Justice & Compensation for Victims
In cases like this one when it’s very likely that negligence contributed to burn injuries, pursuing a burn injury lawsuit can be the best way for injured people to:
- Hold negligent parties accountable for hurting them
- Obtain compensation for their injuries, damages and losses.
While the burn injury lawsuit described above is seeking compensation for the plaintiff’s medical bills and mental suffering, in some cases, it may also be possible to seek compensation for lost wages and long-term disfigurement.
Regardless, however, of the specific nature of the damages, the most important thing for injured people to remember is that working with an experienced attorney will be critical to the success of these cases.
