A 17-year-old swimming instructor at Beaverton’s Sunset Athletic Club has recently been arrested for the alleged sexual assault of at least one child. Arrested on June 23, Mitchell Alan Douglas Kelly is now facing two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct. According to law enforcement officials at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Kelly allegedly committed the acts of child sex abuse after providing a swimming lesson.

Investigators suspect that there may be more victims out there, as Kelly reportedly also has a history of working as a swimming instructor at the Beaverton Swim Center on Northwest Science Park Road. He worked there for 8 months before he took the job with the Sunset Athletic Club. Law enforcement officials encourage people with any information about other incidents of alleged child sex abuse committed by Kelly to call them at 503-846-2500 and report the alleged abuse.

Tragically, the June arrest of Kelly is not the only child sex abuse scandal to have rocked the Sunset Athletic Club. In March, a massage therapist who was employed at the Club allegedly sexually abused a 15-year-old girl at the facility. The alleged perpetrator in that case, 39-year-old Aaron Jamison Sanne, is currently facing some serious criminal charges related to the incident.

Criminal Cases Are Not Sex Abuse Victims Only Recourse

While the criminal cases against the perpetrators of child sex abuse are important and powerful forms of recourse for such heinous acts against children, these are not the only legal remedies that victims and their families have when it comes to holding the abusers accountable. In fact, victims and their families can file civil lawsuits against the abusers in order to obtain compensation that can be critical to helping victims obtain the treatments they need in order to recover.

At the Savage Law Firm, our Portland child sex abuse attorneys understand that no amount of money can ever make up for childhood sexual abuse. However, we also know that helping abuse survivors obtain compensation from their abusers can be crucial to helping them obtain a sense of justice as well as:

  • The financial support they need if they are unable to work due to their psychological issues
  • The counseling and other long-term treatments they may need to deal with the damage caused by their abuse.
