Researchers and medical professionals refer to surgery mistakes as “never events” because, essentially, these mistakes should never happen if medical professionals are diligent, attentive, properly trained and performing their jobs as they should.

As Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H., a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, has explained:

There are mistakes in health care that are not preventable. Infection rates will likely never get down to zero even if everyone does everything right, for example. But the [never] events [that] we’ve estimated are totally preventable.

Fact 2 – About 1 in every 3 cases of surgery errors leads to a permanent injury.

Although some surgery errors may only result in temporary (if any) injuries, nearly 33 percent – or 1 in every 3 – of these medical mistakes causes irreversible injuries. This is extremely tragic, and people who sustain such permanent impairments due to the negligence of medical professionals may be entitled to compensation for their:

  • Medical bills and ongoing treatment costs
  • Lost wages and future inability to earn a living
  • Mental anguish
  • Other losses and suffering.
